After Hours Emergency

After Hours Emergency

Has your child just been seen at A&E or an after-hours clinic and told your child needs surgery for a fracture?

If you are at the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) or A&E, you can request for either Dr Lam Kai Yet or Dr Peter Lee to be contacted to review your child’s injury. If we are unavailable or delayed due to other clinical commitments, the next best option is to contact either of our clinics the following day for an early assessment.

In most cases, surgery does not need to happen that same night. The on-call doctor at A&E is often a general orthopaedic surgeon, trained to manage a broad range of injuries in patients of all ages. As paediatric orthopaedic specialists at Bone Island Children’s Clinic, we are specially trained in children’s injuries and can assess and treat them more effectively.

If your child has already been given a splint or cast and their pain seems manageable, it is usually safe to wait and see us the next day, where we can review the X-rays and discuss whether surgery is needed.

Seek emergency care at A&E immediately if your child has any of the following: an open wound at the fracture site, a limb that looks pale, feels cold, or is numb, loss of movement or feeling, severe pain that isn’t easing, or heavy bleeding. These require immediate attention regardless of the time of day.

FAQs

For most childhood fractures, splints and casts hold the bone in place in the meantime, and swelling often settles, which can make treatment safer and more accurate.

Your child should be given a splint or cast and pain relief before you leave A&E. This is usually enough to keep them comfortable until we see you.

Any X-rays, discharge notes, or reports from the A&E or after-hours clinic, plus a list of any medication given.

No referral is needed. You can contact us directly and let us know your child has already been assessed at A&E or an after-hours clinic.
